Research Team

In MALDI4Health, our research team is compromised of a group of 2 professors and 4 researchers with expertise in Analytical and Industrial Chemistry. More specifically, professor Thomaidis, professor at the Laboratory of Analytical Chemistry, Department of Chemistry of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (https://trams.chem.uoa.gr) is specialized in Analytical and Environmental Chemistry, with more than >320 publications in refereed journals, 17 invited book chapters in collective volumes 17 invited book chapters in collective volumes and >17000 citations (H-index >71). His field of expertise covers mostly the identification and detection of emerging contaminants in environmental samples with wide-scope target and non-target analysis.

For our group, the Trace Analysis and Mass Spectrometry (TrAMS) group (https://trams.chem.uoa.gr), the development and application of target and un-targeted screening approaches has since many years been the core of our research, setting us at the forefront of un-targeted advances at an international level. Through the successful implementation of the research program “Aristeia – Excellence” TREMEPOL project (Tremepol- UoA - Homepage), the TrAMS group has developed cutting-edge methodologies and workflows dedicated to both suspect and non-target screening for the identification of wide range of LMWCs classes (lipids, drug metabolites) etc. TrAMS group has also established substantial expertise in the toxicity assessment of environmental pollutants, providing comprehensive endo- and xeno-metabolome coverage of the tested organisms  [1]. In the last years, MALDI-HRMS belongs to the cutting-edge technologies of TrAMS group, investigating a wide range of analytical problems, including proteomics, lipodomics and metabolics approaches in a variety of food and environmental samples.

Nikolaos Thomaidis is the Vice President of the University of Athens and Professor of Analytical Chemistry. He is specialized in Analytical Chemistry and Mass Spectrometry, with an emphasis in environmental analytical chemistry of emerging contaminants and the full characterization of organic fraction of environmental and food samples. He leads Trace Analysis and Mass Spectrometry (TrAMS) research group (https://trams.chem.uoa.gr) whose current research interest focuses on the development of cutting-edge HRMS methodologies and data processing chemometric tools, following targeted and untargeted workflows. These methodologies have been implemented in numerous national and EU funded projects. He has a constant research activity over the last 30 years in Analytical Chemistry with, mainly, environmental and food applications, summarized in >439 articles, 24 book chapters, receiving >18,150 citations and 78-h-index (Scopus).

Dr. Damalas Dimitrios (PhD, MSc) has ample experience in high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) based toxicity assessment of EPs (WP3). His main research activity expertise include the detection and identification of environmental pollutants (EPs) and their  biotransformation products (bio-TPs) by HRMS analysis. He also holds  substantial expertise in the toxicity assessment of EPs based on metabolomics approaches in aquatic model organisms such as zebrafish (Danio rerio) (https://doi.org/10.1021/acs.est.8b01327) . Thus, he is a key participant in WP3.

Aleiferi Eleni (PhD candidate, MSc) has previously accumulated experience through her masters’ degree in HRMS through wide scope target analysis and suspect screening methodologies. Over the past years she has also extensively worked on various research projects for the identification of various emerging contaminants (ECs) in environmental samples via wide-scope target analysis of >2000 compounds (https://doi.org/10.1021/acs.estlett.3c00882). . She is a main researcher in WP2.
